1. Discover and classify
Inventory existing systems and label data by sensitivity. This upfront work prevents accidental exposure during migrations or integrations.
- Run workshops with stakeholders to document sources, owners, and downstream consumers.
- Tag fields containing personal or contractual data and define minimisation rules.
- Create a migration decision record capturing risks, mitigations, and rollback triggers.
2. Design before migrate
We prototype schema diagrams, mapping tables, and load strategies in version control. Pilot migrations run against masked data before production.
- Use tools such as dbt or SQLFluff to codify transformations and enforce style.
- Automate validation tests (row counts, checksums, referential integrity) per batch.
- Plan for cutover windows, dual-write periods, and deterministic rollback.
3. Govern and monitor
After go-live we track lineage, freshness, and access. SLOs keep business units confident their dashboards and APIs reflect reality.
- Implement data catalogues or lightweight lineage maps for traceability.
- Set freshness alerts (e.g. load delay > 15 minutes) and send them to the owning team.
- Schedule quarterly data quality reviews and schema drift assessments.
